Statement on working with perpetrators of sexual violence

First Step is a registered charity to support male victims of sexual abuse (aged 13 years and over) who live in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. While the majority of male survivors do not go on to perpetrate violent crimes, there are, however, a small number who may.

As a support organisation our place is not to judge, but to treat everyone who refers to us with respect and compassion. As such, we do offer services to male survivors who have perpetrated crimes, so long as the focus of the work is around their experiences as a victim/survivor. If they require help around their perpetration of crimes then our service is not best placed to support them. When we encounter such cases we will signpost and refer to more appropriate agencies/organisations for support.

We recognise that by not offering support to some perpetrators of crimes, we run the risk of encouraging people not to tell us about thoughts or behaviours, past or present, that worry them. This could lead to them being prevented from getting the help that they need and miss an opportunity to prevent future crimes. We understand that by telling us about such thoughts and behaviours these victims and survivors are being open and asking for help, and as an organisation we want to honour and respect that.

We take the safety and well-being of all our service users very seriously. In assessing all service users we consider any possible risks they may pose to their own safety, and to others. If required special arrangements will be made to negate such risks.
